Libbey moves into plastics with Traex acquisition

TOLEDO, OH, Dec. 9 -- Libbey Inc., a producer of glass tableware and tabletop products for the food service industry, has moved into plastics products with the acquisition of Menasha Corp.'s Traex unit. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Traex business manufactures a range of products, including glassware washing and storage racks, trays, dispensers, and organizers for the food service industry. It operates a manufacturing and distribution facility in Dane, WI, and employs approximately 100.

The acquisition is part of Libbey's strategy to expand its product line for the food service industry. Based in Toledo, the company operates glass tableware manufacturing plants in California, Louisiana, and Ohio. In addition, Libbey is a joint venture partner in the largest glass tableware company in Mexico. In 2001, its net sales totaled $419.6 million.
