Minerals Introduces Engineered Additives for Enhancing Bioplastics Performance

Minerals Technologies Inc., a worldwide manufacturer of minerals products, has launched a new product line of engineered mineral additives for reinforcement in bioplastic applications.

The products being introduced by Specialty Minerals Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Minerals Technologies, are designed for bioplastic-based consumer disposables such as packaging, food and beverage service ware, gift cards, signage, films and bags.

The mineral additives are: EMforce® Bio, UltraTalc® 609 and MicroTuff® AGD 609. These additives provide cost-effective solutions for enhancing the performance of bioplastics, while improving processing throughput of bioplastic compounds.

EMforce® Biosignificantly improves the impact resistance and ductility of biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). EMforce® Bio also provides down-gauging capability in thermoforming sheets without sacrificing performance, thus reducing the amount of plastic needed in parts production. UltraTalc® 609 and MicroTuff® AGD 609 are nucleating agents for semi-crystalline biopolymers that increase the modulus, or stiffness, and melt strength of bioplastics containing PLA and PHA.
