Solvay Declares LTL Authorized Color Compounder of AvaSpire® PAEK Resin Used in Medical Industry

SpecialChem / Jun 8, 2011

Custom compounder LTL Color Compounders, Inc. and Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, a Solvay Specialty Polymers company, has announced that LTL has been named an authorized color compounder of Solvay's AvaSpire® polyaryletherketone (PAEK) resin. The announcement was made at the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East 2011 conference and exhibition currently ongoing in New York City.

LTL will compound and market pre-colored resin based on AvaSpire® AV-651 primarily for the medical industry. "LTL welcomes the addition of AvaSpire PAEK to its rapidly growing medical business which is comprised of the ColorRx® line of proprietary custom medical grade compounds," said Phil Dix, LTL's medical marketing and development manager. "We are very pleased that Solvay has licensed us to sell colored PAEK compounds under their AvaSpire trade name. This reflects the high level of confidence that Solvay has in LTL's ability to satisfy the demanding requirements of the medical market."

"We're excited about this partnership with LTL because it provides a key new channel to reach the fast-growing medical market," said Maria Gallahue-Worl, Solvay Advanced Polymers global business development manager for healthcare. LTL will sell neat and 30% glass-filled grades of colored AvaSpire PAEK.

AvaSpire is a line of proprietary PAEK formulations that are tailored to provide new and unique combinations of performance and value, when compared to PEEK. The availability of colored compounds gives medical device manufacturers unique branding opportunities and provides healthcare professionals with a quick visual reference for identifying instrument types and sizes.

AvaSpire PAEK's mechanical and thermal properties and custom color capability is a unique performance combination for limited-exposure medical devices and equipment. The high temperatures used in steam sterilization and aggressive chemicals used in the cleaning process have limited the material selection for medical devices. "AvaSpire PAEK allows designers and engineers the opportunity to use a high-performance polymer with unique cost and performance benefits as a replacement for traditional metal," explains Gallahue-Worl.

LTL has been certified to ISO 9001 since 2000 and to ISO 13485 since 2009 and was the first compounder in North America to achieve ISO 13485 certification. For more information, contact Phil Dix at (800) 863-4260 or phil.dix @ltlcolor.com.
