Teijin to build polycarbonate resin plant in China

TOKYO, Dec. 4 -- Teijin Chemicals Ltd., a unit of Teijin's Plastic Business Group, plans to establish a polycarbonate resin production and sales company in Zhejiang Province, China. The new company is being established in response to growing global demand for PC, particularly in China.

The new company, Teijin Polycarbonate China, will be established in January 2003. Production will start up in April 2005 with capacity of 50,000 metric tons/yr. In the second stage, Teijin will add another production line, doubling capacity to 100,000 metric tons.

According to Teijin, about two million metric tons of polycarbonate resin is produced each year, with growth of 7%/yr. Demand in China is expected to grow faster than in any other country, at more than 10%, the company estimates.

Teijin currently produces polycarbonate in Japan at a plant in Matsuyama City, and in Singapore, and will have a total capacity of 300,000 metric tons/yr by year end. The company is also building a polycarbonate and ABS compounding facility in Shanghai, which is slated to begin operations in mid-2003.

The new company will be located in the Zhapu Development Zone in Jiaxing City, located in eastern china. Teijin will invest 14 billion yen (US $112 million) and a sales target of 12 billion yen (US $96 million) is expected by fiscal 2006.
