Union Carbide shuts down Seadrift, TX, plant

Published on 2003-09-19. Author : SpecialChem
MIDLAND, MI, Sept. 19 -- Union Carbide Corp., a Dow Chemical subsidiary, has announced the permanent shutdown of its Seadrift, TX, olefins plant. The unit stopped operations on Sept. 12 in line with the time frame announced earlier this year.

The Seadrift cracker had been in operation since 1960 and during its 43-year history produced about 35 billion lb of ethylene.

The closure was part of Dow's comprehensive U.S. Gulf Coast ethylene review announced in 2001. In January of this year, the company said it would close Seadrift and the Texas City, TX, olefins plant during 2003. The Texas City olefins plant was taken out of operation in June.
