Hospital-acquired infections are a serious problem - which hospital administrators continue to grapple with. In the UK, a host of factors - from understaffing to poor cleaning regimes - have been blamed for the problem. In an attempt to show that good design could help to overcome it, the UK's Design Council set a challenge: design an item of hospital equipment that is easy to clean and easy to use - and will cut the chances of spreading infection.
