Thermoplastics account for approximately 90% of all plastic materials for household appliances, with the remaining being thermoset plastics. Among thermoplastic materials, most of them are volume plastics, for example, polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE). The available engineering plastics mainly include acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene acrylonitrile (SAN), nylon or polyamide (PA), polycarbonate (PC), acetal or polyoxymethylene (POM), polyphenylene oxide/polystyrene (PPO/PS), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene terephthalate PBT, acrylic or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), liquid crystal polymer (LCP), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polysulfone (PSF), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Thermoset plastics generally include unsaturated polyester (UPY), SMC (glass filled sheet molding compound), thermosetting polyurethane (PUR), phenolic, melamine, and epoxy resins.
ABS, polystyrene and polypropylene are the most commonly-used plastic materials in household appliances. PP can be used in barrel rolls and also fabricated into internal barrel of dishwasher. Bosch-Siemens Group has launched a PP internal-barrel dishwasher, which can endure an 80°C cleaning agent for dishwasher with stable performance and color. It is predicted that PP will be widely used in other internal devices of dishwashers in the future, such as steel hinges and steel brackets with PVC coating in addition to the internal barrel. Lining materials of refrigerator doors are turning from HIPS (high impact polystyrene) to ABS, which can reduce wall thickness or cost without affecting the strength of components.
