Polykar's Compostable Plastic Bags Utilized Efficiently at Montreal's Zero Waste Day Camps

This summer, the City of Montreal began using Polykar's compostable bags at their Zero Waste Day Camps. Participants not only recycle and compost, they also learn about waste management, thereby creating increased awareness among the children and their parents.

One particular day camp, the St-Donat camp, welcomes 120 children between the ages of 5 and 13. The youths are put into groups of 15 led by camp counsellors ranging between 16 and 22 years of age. The counsellors are trained in responsible waste management initiatives by the Eco-quartiers of Montreal whose goals are to inform, increase awareness and mobilize residents, companies and institutions at the community level regarding all aspects of the environment. In addition to running training programs, they also manage, maintain and distribute the compost generated by the Day Camps.

Montreal's Zero Waste Day Camps program, began in 2008 with 12 camps across the Island, has grown to 35 camps today. The program's objectives are:

  • To create awareness and encourage eco-responsible habits such as recycling and composting among the children and their parents
  • To offer the camp counsellors tools for reflection and activities that help children understand the need to become responsible eco-citizens
  • To provide recommendations to counsellors and coordinators on the different ways to integrate the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) approach in waste management.

Some of the many camp activities include, but are not limited to bird watching, building objects out of recyclable material such as cardboard, glass and plastic, having picnics and taking walks. The collection of compost and recyclables occurs every day at lunch and during snack time. During lunch picnics, the children and counsellors eat in a neighbouring park and at the end of the meal, the counsellor's call out, "Trash, recycling, compost!" The participants bring their waste to three different trash bins and counsellors help the children sort their waste.

Kim Longpre, Coordinator at the St-Donat day camp, explains, "Using Polykar's compostable bags to collect the compost facilitates our activities, our lunches and moving between activities because I don't need to wash the bins! All I do is tie a knot, and bring the bags to our own composting system. The bags are great and don't leak!"

Composting can be made clean and easy through the use of Polykar's compostable bags for green waste collection. The bags are easy to manipulate, lightweight, more practical than paper bags, and waterproof. They are certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), the Bureau de normalisation du Quebec (BNQ), and meet the North American standards of compostability set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM-D6400).
