BASF at Chinaplas 2015: To Showcase Thermoplastic- & Composite-based Solutions for Auto & more

Published on 2015-05-11. Author : SpecialChem

GUANGZHOU, China -- BASF at Chinaplas 2015: “Design x Innovation”, Booth A21 in Hall 13.2 and Viewing Deck outside Hall 9.3 in Zone B, China Import & Export Fair Complex, Pazhou, Guangzhou, from May 20-23, 2015.

World’s lightest airplane trolley, made with BASF’s Ultrason®

BASF will showcase one of the world's lightest airplane trolleys - Quantum Trolley - produced by Norduyn Inc. It features BASF’s Ultrason® amorphous thermoplastics in the door latch housing and extruded profiles. The foamed Ultrason® inside the trolley walls weighs only 40 k g/m³. Compared to a trolley made with traditional metal materials, a trolley made with Ultrason® is 40% lighter (about 10kg), a total of around 140kg weight savings for an Airbus A321 airplane. Additional characteristics include its high-temperature strength, stability, insulating properties, inherent flame retardance and low moisture uptake.

Weight saving in aviation can help reduce carbon emissions and improve fuel efficiency. Ultrason® resins are especially suitable for highly stressed parts that must show substantial dimensional stability and good mechanical properties, and can substitute thermosets, metals and ceramics.

BASF brings 1865 concept bike to China for first time

How would the first pedal cycle have looked like if it had been built with today’s advanced materials? At “Design x Innovation” at Chinaplas 2015, BASF is bringing to China the first time its 1865 concept bike, which was designed to rebuild the 19th century bike as a modern bike to answer that question.

Jointly developed by DING3000 design studio and BASF’s designfabrik®, the concept bike – which makes use of 24 different BASF materials – is a source of inspiration and innovation. The collaboration demonstrates our commitment to co-creation. Customers and designers are invited to collaborate with the company in developing new applications and product ideas utilizing advanced plastics.

BASF showcases BMW i3 with all carbon-reinforced plastic body and frame

BASF will showcase BMW i3 – with its body and frame completely made out of carbon-reinforced plastics. It represents the most extensive use of carbon fiber in a mass-produced car in the history to date. It is also an example of how light weighting with high performance plastics not only helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but also enables design freedom which leads to innovative solutions.

For the BMW i3, BASF has supplied several innovative plastics materials as well as technical design expertise specifically related to the part development for the backrests of the front seats, key reinforcement parts in the carbon fiber body and the rear seat shell.
