PITTSBURGH -- Covestro LLC has introduced a new polycarbonate that meets the evolving needs of the automotive industry. Designed for high-gloss automotive exterior applications, Makrolon® AX was developed to satisfy color homogeneity and surface quality requirements.

Demand of Glass-replacing Polycarbonate in Automotive Industry

  • Demand for lightweight, high-performance polycarbonates grows with increasingly popular large, transparent surfaces and panoramic automotive roofs.
  • Polycarbonates are also used in exterior trim and pillars.
  • Covestro’s polycarbonates in conjunction with siloxane coatings provide excellent properties, including transparency, high impact resistance and design freedom for these applications.

Covestro’s New Makrolon® AX Polycarbonate

High-gloss Automotive Exterior Applications

    • Makrolon® AX with high-performance coatings is the new material combination of choice for automotive exterior roof trims and pillar applications.
    • New polycarbonate replaces glass which helps producing parts in designs which was not previously possible.
    • Makrolon® AX polycarbonate enhances styling and makes the panoramic roof surface appears larger with its glass-like appearance, while also hiding the bodywork structure.
    • Automotive exterior parts made of Makrolon® AX polycarbonate are coated and are usually used in combination with transparent polysiloxane coatings.

Makrolon® AX Polycarbonate in Cool Black Colors

  • Covestro developed “cool black” colors to help keep the polycarbonate surface cool.
  • Cool black color helps in reducing surface temperature extending part life by significantly increasing weathering performance.
  • Cool black colors, allowing the IR to be transmitted through the part resulting in prolonged performance of the coating, outperforms standard black colors.
  • Cool black colors also enable laser welding of the exterior trim’s B-surface to other components.

“The color formulation and chemistry of this polycarbonate line were tailored specifically to meet the surface quality and coating durability requirements for roof trim components,” said David Loren, glazing segment manager, Polycarbonates, Covestro LLC. “With a cool black surface, Makrolon® AX prolongs the performance of the coating system and increases weathering by 50 percent.”

Need of Covestro’s Makrolon® AX Polycarbonate

  • New Makrolon® AX polycarbonate grade and colors were designed to optimize the injection molding process to improve productivity and reduce costs.
  • Commercially available in two grades: Makrolon® AX2677 (with UV stabilization) and Makrolon® AX2675 (without UV stabilization).
  • Both grades deliver performance and technology tailored to the needs of the automotive industry.
  • Covestro offers customers valuable technical expertise for automotive solutions including material selection and part analysis, as well as processing and design support.

Makrolon® is a registered trademark of the Covestro Group.
