Working Prototype for LED Lamps with PC Heat Sinks by Covestro at K 2016

At K 2016, Covestro is exhibiting prototypes of working LED lamps incorporating heat sinks made of the highly filled polycarbonate Makrolon® TC8030. This material has a very high thermal conductivity of 20 W/m*K (“TC” stands for “thermally conductive”) and was developed specifically to meet these requirements.

LED lighting technology is becoming increasingly established as a highly efficient method for generating light. Covestro therefore is fueling the further expansion of LED technology with its tailored material solutions, including a design for heat sinks that effectively dissipate the heat generated by LEDs. Heat sinks are critical to ensuring the long service life of LED lamps.

The prototypes were manufactured by eurnortech LED solutions in Oberpframmern, Germany, and can be used in various lighting solutions. The lenses were sourced from the Finnish company Ledil Oy, the LEDs from Osram. The functional components confirm that the material is ideal for heat sinks in LED lamps.

Axel Wetzchewald, head of marketing for LED applications in the Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America region at Covestro, said:
Compared to the aluminum typically used, this plastic offers both good thermal conductivity and a high degree of design freedom”.

Heat Sink Design

  • The heat sink design was originated in a collaborative project between Covestro, Karelia University of Applied Sciences (UAS) and the Finnish injection molding specialist Vesuto Oy. 
  • A comparison of the heat sink made from Makrolon® TC8030 with similar components made of other polymers shows that the polycarbonate (PC) very effectively dissipates the heat generated by LEDs on built-in printed circuit boards.
