HYOSUNG at Chinaplas 2015: To Launch HYOSUNG PK, an Engineering Thermoplastic Polymer

HYOSUNG CORPORATION will participate in CHINAPLAS 2015, the 29th International Exhibition on Plastics and Rubber Industries, which will be held on 20-23 May, 2015 at China Import & Export Fair Complex, Pazhou, Guangzhou, PR China.

A New Engineering Plastic, HYOSUNG POLYKETONE is exhibited at Chinaplas 2015 as a differentiated new engineering plastic. Those who already have experience with Polyketone or have high interest in bringing innovations to their value chain with new materials are all invited to the stand. The world’s first mass-production facility of HYOSUNG POLYKETONE with 50,000MT/year capacity is currently under construction and scheduled to come on stream in June 2015. The plant is located in southern industrial part of Korea.

Environment-friendly Thermoplastic Made of Carbon Monoxide


A new thermoplastic polymer, HYOSUNG POLYKETONE is made of carbon monoxide and olefins with highly compact crystal structure. Consuming carbon monoxide as a monomer up to 50% of the polymer weight, HYOSUNG POLYKETONE contributes to our society to become more environmentally sustainable.

Unique Balance of Properties

High resilience and strength, excellent chemical and wear resistance, very good hydrolysis resistance and flame retardancyIn addition to its environment-friendly characteristic, HYOSUNG POLYKETONE possesses unique combination of outstanding properties, positioning between engineering plastics and super engineering plastics in various applications where it could bring technical solutions or cost effectiveness.

High resilience with excellent mechanical strength is one of the interesting properties. Elongation at yield of HYOSUNG POLYKETONE is over 20% and elongation at break over 250%, while its tensile strength is at the same level of conditioned PA66 and its impact strength about twice higher than that of PA66 or PBT.

Another advantage of HYOSUNG POLYKETONE is sustainable mechanical properties and dimensional stability upon moisture absorption. Along with high resilience and strength, this feature allows HYOSUNG POLYKETONE to fit-in various snap-fit assembly parts such as electrical connectors.

HYOSUNG POLYKETONE has excellent chemical resistance to automotive fluids, hydrocarbon solvents, salts, and weak acids and bases. Therefore, automotive components and many different parts exposed to various chemicals are one of the right applications of this material.

Wear and abrasion resistance is another excellent characteristic of HYOSUNG POLYKETONE, and its natural grade shows about 10 times higher wear properties than POM base. In some cases, it can replace modified POM grades with even additional noise reducing values especially welcomed by OA/Home appliances gear applications.
Combining its tribological property and chemical resistance, conveyor system components are one of the promising applications of HYOSUNG POLYKETONE.

HYOSUNG POLYKETONE shows considerably higher hydrocarbon barrier properties than PA11 or PA12 and similar gas barrier property to EVOH. Together with its chemical resistance, barrier properties of HYOSUNG POLYKETONE shows high possibilities in automotive fuel line and packaging industries, high opportunities are expected.In terms of flame retardancy, HYOSUNG POLYKETONE generates the natural char layer when burned which helps to avoid further contact with oxygen and heat. This makes less flame retardants sufficient to make HYOSUNG POLYKETONE reach UL-V0 compared to other polymers with good physical properties maintained.

The range of application is extensive, including Automotive, Electrical & Electronics, and various Industrial uses. Where its specific balance of excellent properties matches, HYOSUNG POLYKETONE could provide all participants in the value chain improved technical performance of the final products such as connectors, fuel components, gears, conveyor systems, and packaging materials etc.
