Metabolix at NPE2015: To Focus on Broad Range of Applications for Mirel® PHA Biopolymers

The Metabolix biopolymers team is gearing up for NPE2015: The International Plastics Showcase which will be held March 23-27 in Orlando, FL. This show is arguably the most important plastics tradeshow occurring this year. SPI, the sponsor of NPE, expects more than 2,000 leading suppliers and 60,000 business professionals from more than 100 countries to convene at the meeting to showcase and discuss the latest technology, products, trends, and equipment for every phase of plastics processing.

One of the coolest aspects of the show is the operation of commercial scale conversion equipment in the show exhibit halls where conference attendees can see blown film, PET bottles and injection molding products being manufactured LIVE right on the show floor. This aspect of the show makes NPE2015 a truly vibrant program and an excellent venue to engage with customers, prospects and industry players.

Located in the South Hall, Team Metabolix will be hosting its booth #15041, decked out in white, green and blue. At the show, it will focus on the performance of Mirel biopolymers and the spectrum of high value solutions that can be achieved with their innovative PHA material.

  • PLA Polymeric Modifiers: PHA-based polymeric modifiers can extend the performance range of PLA while maintaining biocontent and compostability.
  • PVC Processing Aids and Polymeric Modifiers: PHA processing aids and performance modifiers can improve the processing and performance of PVC compounds used in construction materials and other PVC applications.
  • Barrier Coatings for Paper and Cardboard: Biobased, biodegradable PHA are derived from renewable raw materials and, like our other PHA products, and are uniquely compostable, marine degradable, and anaerobically digestible while performing comparably to polyethylene coatings.
  • PHA Micropowders: Biobased and marine degradable PHA micropowder materials are being developed as an alternative to replace non-biodegradable synthetic plastic microbeads in cosmetic and personal care applications.
  • Functional Biodegradation: The biocontent and unparalleled biodegradation profile of Mirel® biopolymer materials make them uniquely suited to a range of applications from agricultural and marine uses to water treatment and consumer products.

At ANTEC, the SPI technical conference co-located with NPE, it will have the opportunity to highlight latest research with the presentation of two technical papers. Company’s Mike Andrews, on behalf of the team, will present a paper titled “Improving the Physical Properties and Versatility of PLA with PHA Copolymer Blends.” Its collaborator, Christopher Thellen, a researcher with the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering group, will present a joint paper titled “Biodegradable Latex Paper Coatings Based on Polyhydroxyalkanoates for Improved Moisture Resistance.”
