Polythene UK Launches Polyair, a Biodegradable Alternative to Traditional Polythene

Published on 2016-02-25. Author : SpecialChem

Polyair is a revolutionary new product launched by Polythene UK as a completely carbon positive biodegradable alternative to traditional polythene. It’s been under development for ten years and is now available as a fully recyclable, carbon positive packaging material.

When combined with standard polythene or Polylite, Polyair can provide an environmentally sensitive alternative across the whole polythene product range, so whether it’s films or wraps, bags, covers or tubes that are need we can supply a greener alternative to your packaging solutions.

Being carbon positive, Polyair captures more CO2 than it releases during the product lifecycle, meaning it’s one of the greenest packaging materials currently available. Indeed, when launched, it was the only 100% recyclable, carbon positive, packaging material available on the UK market.

A little about Polyair

But maybe you’re thinking that Polyair isn’t such a new product after all? Hasn’t it been around before?

Well yes, and no. Originally Polyair was launched as an oxy-degradable polythene which, when exposed to air, degraded completely within a couple of years. That was back in 2009 when such a product seemed like the perfect solution to the problem of plastic pollution, and it became the most popular route for packaging suppliers looking to advance in the environmental responsibility league.

However the original version of Polyair had its downsides, and it quickly became apparent that a product that degraded in its entirety within three years wasn’t entirely suitable as a product in our atmosphere. This was especially the case when packaging was reused for other purposes.

However since these early developments of the product, Polyair has improved dramatically and has now been relaunched as a fully biodegradable, carbon positive, packaging product instead.

Green credentials

The latest version of Polyair was developed as an organic polymer made from sugar cane, which makes it a very environmentally responsible packaging material, aiding the global reduction of carbon dioxide.

As it’s derived entirely from an organic product, Polyair may be seen as proactively green because while growing; the sugarcane captures CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and releases oxygen back. This means it’s entirely carbon positive at this stage of production, consuming much more CO2 than it produces, and the surplus is such that it outweighs CO2 production at other stages of the manufacturing process.

If that’s not enough for your green conscience, as a natural product it also comes with the added benefit of being completely biodegradable making it one of the greenest materials currently available.

To make the Polyair product suitable for packaging manufacture, it’s combined with Polylite which itself uses 20% less polymer than standard polythene, to form a strong, durable alternative to traditional polythene. Furthermore, for every ton of Polyair that’s manufactured, another 2.5 tons of CO2 has been captured from the atmosphere as a result.

Advantages of using Polyair

As a product, Polyair comes completely integrated within the existing Polylite product range so it can simply be phased into your packaging supplies, resulting in an instant improvement to your green credentials and dramatically reducing your carbon footprint in the bargain.

Using Polyair as an alternative to regular polythene provides a cost-effective solution across the entire packaging product range, so it can be used as a means to help meet your industry’s corporate social responsibility targets and reduce your packaging and waste payment obligations along the way.
