Toray Industries, Inc. has recently announced that its partially plant-derived Ecodear® PTT composite fiber (filament yarn) and textiles win the Eco Mark certification. Ecodear® PTT textile products use DuPont™ Sorona® polymer, a partially plant-based poly trimethylene terephthalate (PTT) resin produced by DowDupont Specialty Products Division and supplied by DuPont Specialty Products Limited.

Eco-friendly PTT Textile Products

The Ecodear® PTT composite fiber and textile products obtained the Eco Mark Product Category No. 104 Household Textile Products certification. This is the first time in the world for PTT textile products to obtain the Type I environmental certification (Eco Mark in Japan).

DuPont™ Sorona® Polymer

  • DuPont™ Sorona® polymer is a partially plant-based polymer made by fermenting plant-based sugar, and terephthalate resulting in a product with 37% annually renewable ingredients.
  • The use of renewable materials in producing Sorona® enables for a lower environmental footprint and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to products such as Nylon, 6.
  • Toray’s Ecodear® PTT composite fiber is a partially plant-based material that uses DuPont™ Sorona® Polymer.
  • Toray, leveraging the comfort provided by the soft stretch properties of Sorona® fibers, has been supplying the textile using Sorona® fibers for sports apparel and other applications under the PRIMEFLEX® brand.

In recent years, demand for environmentally friendly materials has been growing in sports and outdoor fields in Europe and the U.S. as well as from apparel brands in casual wear and fashion fields given the increasing environmental awareness. There have been such materials that use plant-derived ingredients in these fields, but due to the lack of penetration of the concepts of assessing compatibility and ensuring reliability based on international standards, it has not been possible to fully promote materials with high environmental performance.

Type I Environmental Label Product

With Ecodear® using DuPont™ Sorona® being certified as a Type I environmental label product, Toray will strengthen the deployment of PRIMEFLEX®. This excellent textile material targets a wide range of fields from sports and outdoors to casual and fashion with an exceptionally comfortable material that combines textile performance and reliable environmental performance.

Both DuPont Specialty Products Limited and Toray will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable environment through the expansion of highly reliable, high performing, and environmentally friendly materials.
