Advances in Automotive Polycarbonate Glazing Accelerating

Car manufacturers are embracing new materials and technologies as consumers demand cleaner transport and carmakers center their focus on sustainability issues. Plastics use in car manufacturing is also accelerating as legislation in Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere apply stricter limits on emissions from new cars and demand grows for advances in motor vehicle fuel efficiency. One effect is the automobile industry's increasing recognition of the distinct advantages that polycarbonate (PC) window glazing provide as an alternative to glass. Demand for PC in automotive glazing could rise from the current consumption of 3,000 tonnes per year to 100,000 tonnes per year by 2019. Bayer MaterialScience's BayVision PC glazing group has taken the global lead in material and process system development very ably led by Volkhard Krause, Head of the Automotive Glazing Team, Bayer MaterialScience AG, together with Bruce Benda, Head of Polycarbonate Glazing Development North America, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. Recent major technical conferences such as the Plastics in Automotive Glazing-North America has confirmed BMS leadership in the field.
