While working with LSR (liquid silicone rubber) has its drawbacks, it is a two component material that requires special equipment and tooling to process, it also has its benefits including heat stability up to 180°C, increasing to 250°C with the right stabilizer package; low temperature flexibility to -50°C; and retention of mechanical properties over the life of the material. All these attributes are great traditional rubber replacement capabilities. Suppliers are working to expand the material's potential applications particularly by molding to a plastic substrate. There are currently two methods for bonding the silicone, either with mechanical interlocks or by applying a primer. Both are inefficient.Wacker Silicones has been further developing its range of self-adhesive grades. The self adhesive LSR grades have the adhesion promoter built into the silicone material itself. Because the LSR materials have similar process characteristics such as cycle times, the technology exists to overmold thermoplastic with LSR producing a single component eliminating secondary operations.
