Extrusion Cost Management

SpecialChem / Jul 1, 2009

Managing extrusion cost is one of industry's favorite worries. But it can be achieved in reality. First step is to estimate the efficiency of the extruder – how much of the power input (heaters and motors) actually gets into the plastic. Many years ago, Kruder and Nunn (HPM) studied efficiency of actual extrusion operations (no theory, no models), and found that it varied from 30% to 70% -- that is, an average of 50%. This loss can be countered by focussing on reducing material cost.
