Film technology for a chrome finish for automotive grille

SpecialChem / Feb 1, 2010

The automaker Hyundai Kia Motor Company (HKMC) has chosen a Soliant film technology i.e. Fluorex™ bright film to provide a chrome finish to the grille of its Verna vehicles (Accent in Europe). Fluorex™ bright film is used on a variety of plastic substrates such as ABS, PP, PVC, providing finishes comparable to chrome plating. This sustainable alternative to chrome plating that offers very low emissions, high impact performance and 100% recyclability can be used in insert molding, extrusion lamination and thick sheet thermoforming. To produce its new chrome finish grille, HKMC has developed a fully automated process in which Soliant Fluorex™ bright film is thermoformed into preforms that are then positioned in an injection mold and molded in a single shot grille.
