High End Design Oriented Major Appliance Trends

SpecialChem / Jun 9, 2009

Today's appliance designers must conquer many conflicting challenges. The products that they develop must differentiate themselves from the competition while simultaneously achieving similar objectives, such as energy efficiency and ease of use. Designers must find a way to produce sophisticated technology that is intuitive to use, and presents itself with an eye-catching appearance. Plastics have assisted in developing the major appliance end uses that include cooking (50% of global shipments annually), home laundry (25%), refrigeration (15%), dishwashers (6%), and home energy devices (4%). Roughly 2 billion pounds of plastics annually find their way into appliance applications globally, with both North America and Europe at 750 million pounds each and Asia at 500 million pounds. Average annual growth rates (AAGR) for these global regions are currently 2.5% (North America), Europe (2.5%), and Asia (4.5%).
