Highlights from the High Performance Plastics Conference: Materials and Design

SpecialChem / Mar 8, 2011

High Performance Plastics (HPP) and their uses were highlighted during the RAPRA conference held on February 23rd and 24th in Köln, Germany. Through 15 technical presentations from resin manufacturers, fiber and filler suppliers, universities and part manufacturers, the HPP 2011 conference covered new materials and technologies, but also innovative uses of polymers for cost effective metal replacement applications. We selected two presentations out of this conference because their represent pretty well what is happening in demanding markets. First one is the point of view of a famous OEM: Airbus. The second one shows how chemistry can substantially change the performances of a given polymer, opening up new application opportunities or extending its use despite increased severity of requirements: the ETFE copolymer case was presented by Asahi Glass Chemicals Europe Ltd.

Dr. JF Lamèthe, from Airbus Operations SAS located in Toulouse, France, made a presentation to explain how Airbus is foreseeing the use of HPP into its aircrafts in the coming years. Thanks to his role as Engineer from the Composite Materials, Processes and Technology Department of Airbus he first put into perspective the historical background of the HPP introduction into Airbus aircrafts in 1980. Since then the market share of HPP vs. other materials (mainly metal) has significantly increased, and the trend will most probably be the same in the coming years...
