Melt Temperature Measurement

Melt temperature is a measure of the temperature of the melt at a specific point. It is NOT a measure of the metal (barrel, adapter, die) near that point. Therefore, it isn't safe to assume that the melt is at or near the metal temperature, and usually it isn't. Also, it is NOT a controlled nor controlling variable. You read what you get. Melt temperature is directly related to cooling rate, as the hotter it comes out, the more cooling is needed, and where cooling is the limit to production rate (e.g., blown film), it is a key variable. It also relates to viscosity as the melt comes out of the die; hotter melt is less viscous, thinner, soupier melt. Therefore, it relates to managing the melt (sag, sticking, holding gauge). For some plastics, melt temperature is related to appearance, notably gloss. It also relates to the possibility of degradation, a result of time x temperature, which may lead to gels, black specks, and/or the need to stop the extrusion to clean out the degraded material.
