Multi-market Focused Stiff Plastic Resin Application Solutions

SpecialChem / Donald Rosato – Nov 5, 2012

Recent 2011-2012 international plastics trade shows have highlighted a series of super high stiff base resin application solutions from normal through high temperature ranges.

Volkswagen and parts manufacturer MAHLE Filter are using glass fiber reinforced PP composite from Borealis to produce auto air intake manifolds. The application of a SiOx (silicone oxide) stiff clear barrier layer to PLA film greatly enhances its barrier properties without negatively impacting the compostability.

Ford with A. Schulman has developed a wheat-straw reinforced plastic third row interior storage bin/interior lid for use in the Ford Flex. High voltage resistant grade nylon in place of traditional thermosets for high-performance industrial circuit breaker housings eases field installation and lowers manufacturing costs.

In wind turbines epoxy offers stronger mechanical performance—particularly tensile and flexural strength—especially important for blades longer than 26 meters (85 feet).

German kitchen appliance manufacturer Miele is using a new grade of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) in an innovative blow molded, space efficient, hot water tank designed to withstand high temperatures up to 220°C.

The metal stiff competitive polyetherimide medical Ricordi Chamber is emerging as a promising treatment to reverse Type I diabetes. Tideland Signal Corporation’s new flasher/lampchanger, the TF-3B MicroPower OMNIBUS II, features a turret made of ultra-stiff 30% glass-filled KetaSpire KT-880 polyetheretherketone (PEEK) resin.

Injection molded thermoplastic polyimide is replacing metal to produce engine bushings...
