Recycled Plastic Composites Run Out Traditional Railroad Ties

Axion International Inc, a producer and developer of industrial-grade recycled composite plastic resins and railroad ties (used as base for rail tracks), has won a sub-contract worth $100,000 for railroad ties. The innovative recycled plastic railroad ties will now be used in military applications. Beale Air Force Base in Marysville, Northern California awarded the contract to Axion, and the deadline to deliver the ties is March 1, 2011.

Axion won the contract proposal with the help of 3D Global Solutions which provided its structural composite railroad ties fully designed using recycled plastics. These will be further used as a replacement for existing older lines on the base. Materials Sciences and Engineering Department of Rutgers University assisted Axion in developing proprietary Recycled Structural Composite (RSC) material which is claimed to be inert, contain no toxic materials, resistant to infestation, and will not leach toxic chemicals or warp. Because it is lighter than traditional materials like wood, steel and concrete, transporting RSC materials will be easy and less expensive. Using patented technologies, Axion transforms everyday consumer and industrial plastic waste into standard structural products that are strong enough to support trains and tanks.

Axion has also constructed a bridge for the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, NC, which is expected to begin this month. The bridge is capable of supporting more than 70 ton of vehicles. The new thermoplastic structure will be in dimension 58(L) x 17(W) feet and will be supported by 22 pilings driven to a depth of between 40-55 feet.
