Silicone Elastomers Conference Review: Versatile Polymers with Unbeaten Performances

SpecialChem / Thibaud Deleger – Apr 23, 2012

The Silicone Elastomers 2012 Conference held in Berlin on 27th & 28th March was full of presentations and discussions on how this market segment is going on these days. Said to take a less than 2% share in volume of the total elastomer market the silicone elastomers are however an exciting segment thanks to the high performances of these materials and the multiple applications ones can make with them. Throughout the 19 presentations held during this 2 days conference the superiority of the silicone elastomer performances were demonstrated by comparing them to other thermoplastics.

Among the key properties highlighted in these presentations transparency, heat resistance, durability even when exposed to long-term outdoors conditions was rated high. Beside machine and parts manufacturers three main silicone manufacturers presented their new products or latest technical & commercial successes: Dow Corning, Momentive Performance Materials and Wäcker Chemie AG. Let’s review the three main industries detailed during this Silicone Elastomers 2012 conference where silicone rubbers made significant inroads: Automotive, Electrical Energy and Medical.
