Soft-touch PP for kitchen utensils

SpecialChem / Dec 24, 2009

The Danish firm Vandborg Plastic og Værktøjsfabrik has chosen a new soft-touch polypropylene (PP) grade from LyondellBasell Industries available under the trade name Softell to redesign its popular range of kitchen utensils including corkscrews, bottle openers and salt and pepper pots. This material has been preferred to a thermoplastic elastomer material that is too soft for this application and also to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene terpolymer (ABS) that is more expensive and requires to be coated to obtain a soft touch surface. Furthermore the new soft-touch PP based household goods are produced using a one-step injection molding process, consequently providing up to 40% cost savings.
