The French Sucreries d’Erstein along with some French Research Centres have developed a new technique of lactic acid synthesis aim at the production of poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The new synthesis is based on the fermentation of beet sugar with the discovery of two new bacteria. Another way of producing biodegradable plastics is from cereals as wheat starch processed by a mechanical physical techniques. The latest method being currently patented. The interest of the both methods is the cost saving compared with former techniques. According to recent surveys it will emphasised the use of biodegradable material mainly for food packaging.
