Ostium Adopts Eastman’s Copolyester for Medical Device PackagingOstium Group, a medical device startup dedicated to revolutionizing orthopedic surgical instrumentation, announces its strategic partnership with Eastman, a global specialty materials company.

The collaboration aims to incorporate Eastman’s sustainable packaging solution, Eastar™ 6763 Renew copolyester, into Ostium Group’s innovative CILLAR® Acetabular and Femoral kits for total hip replacements.

Powered by Molecular Recycling Technologies

Ostium Group, known for its commitment to ethical and responsible practices, has chosen Eastar™ 6763 Renew for its device packaging to further minimize the environmental impact of medical procedures. This strategic move highlights Ostium Group’s dedication to sustainability and its role in contributing to a circular economy.

Eastar™ 6763 Renew is powered by Eastman’s innovative molecular recycling technologies and is indistinguishable from Eastar™ 6763 copolyester, with the same durability, safety and performance relied on by medical device companies for decades. Sourcing Eastar™ Renew enables Ostium to certify that plastic waste is being diverted from landfills to produce new packaging. The amount of plastic waste diverted is tracked through an ISCC-certified mass balance accounting approach that allocates recycled content to Eastman Renew materials. By adopting this sustainable packaging solution, Ostium Group is taking a significant step toward reducing plastic waste and its impact on the environment.

As a company focused on improving patient safety and minimizing the environmental impact of healthcare procedures, Ostium is thrilled to collaborate with Eastman. Integrating its sustainable packaging solution, Eastar™ 6763 Renew, aligns perfectly with our mission,” said Vincent Retailleau, cofounder and general manager of Ostium Group. “Together with Eastman, we are committed to delivering innovative solutions that benefit both patients and the planet.

Produces Materials Indistinguishable from Virgin Materials

Eastman’s molecular recycling processes hard-to-recycle plastic waste, setting it apart from traditional mechanical recycling methods. By breaking down plastic waste to the molecular level, Eastman expands sourcing opportunities and produces materials that are indistinguishable from virgin materials. Molecular recycling technology enables the use of Eastar™ Renew in even the most demanding medical applications, ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance.

We are proud to partner with Ostium Group, a company dedicated to transforming the orthopedic industry by prioritizing sustainability and responsible practices,” said Heather Singler, commercial director for medical at Eastman. “Eastar™ Renew 6763 not only enables Ostium Group to enhance the packaging for its devices but also contributes to Eastman’s commitment to a circular economy and reducing plastic waste.

By choosing Eastar™ 6763 Renew, Ostium Group showcases its dedication to environmental responsibility and commitment to improving patient outcomes while minimizing its carbon footprint. With Ostium’s reverse supply chain approach in Europe and North America, the company strives for full circularity of all components with different recycling methods.
