Last year, more than 480,000 tons of wood-plastic composites (WPC) were produced and processed in the U.S., and the demand for these environmen-tally safe materials with their impressive properties continues to rise. The Mexican company Ecomadera has just signed an order for two additional wood extrusion lines from Cincinnati Extrusion GmbH, Vienna, Austria.

The Viennese machine manufacturer is a leading global supplier of extrusion lines for processing plastic materials filled with wood fibers. The company provides ma-chine concepts tailored to customers' needs, as well as comprehensive processing know-how and a choice of individually designed compounds for special applications. Cincinnati has developed its Fiberex T series of conical twin-screw extruders espe-cially for WPC processing, with continuous improvements utilizing the experience gained from more than 100 machines already installed. With its fourth-generation extruders, Cincinnati has set another milestone: line speeds of 5 m/min and an out-put of up to 1,000 kg/h can be achieved even with a wood filler content of up to 85%. Thanks to many years' research and close, fruitful cooperation with its partners, the machine manufacturer able to offer its customers comprehensive counseling, from material production, dosing and processing right up to forming the finished product by means of an appropriate tooling system, and subsequent handling.

WPC products offer the benefit of wood optics without being wood. They can be processed exactly like wood, but are substantially more weather-resistant. From a combination of natural fibers with thermoplastic materials a durable product line has emerged, which is virtually maintenance-free and without splinters. Using the extru-sion process, it can be formed to its final geometry in one production step. WPC products also dispense with the need for time-consuming finishing processes, such as varnishing, glazing or impregnating. The applications for WPC products include decking floors, cat walks, balustrades and fences as well as outdoor furniture, play-ground equipment and wall cladding. They act as substitutes for both tropical hard-wood and simple types of pressurized plywood. Thanks to their lower material costs and enormous versatility, WPC profiles have also come to replace softwood, flake board and MDF board for indoor applications.
