Polyamide TrendsPolyamides, also known as nylons, are a group of synthetic polymers. These have a wide range of industrial and consumer applications.

The wide range of applications and superior properties of PAs have led to new innovations in the field. To reduce dependence on fossil fuels, suppliers are developing bio-based and recyclable options.

Let's review some of the polyamide highlights from 2023.

Sustainable Polyamides for High-performance Applications

Solvay’s PA Grade with 100% Pre-consumer Recycled Content

Solvay introduced specialized grade of Rhodianyl, made of 100% pre-consumer recycled polyamide. The product has achieved SCS Recycled Content Certification. This certification reaffirming Solvay's commitment to circular economy.

Rhodianyl finds use in engineering plastics for the following applications:

  • Automotive
  • Small appliances and
  • Textile markets

DOMO Chemicals’ High-performance Polyamides

DOMO Chemicals showcased its innovative range of TECHNYL® engineered materials at Chinaplas 2023. The new sustainable solutions expand DOMO’s TECHNYL® 4EARTH® portfolio.

  • The first is a hydrolysis-resistant grade TECHNYL® 4EARTH® A1E 218 V30 BK 34NG LP. It offers a sustainable and high-performance alternative TECHNYL® A 218 V30 BK 34NG. This grade is ideal for refrigerant applications.
  • The second is the new generation of TECHNYL® 4EARTH® HFFR (halogen-free flame retardants). It is a unique line of recycled-based solutions for the E&E market. These flame-retardant polyamides are made from recycled raw materials. It has lower CO2 emissions compared to virgin alternatives.

DOMO Chemicals' High Performance Polyamides

For the e-mobility sector, DOMO offers these innovations:

  • TECHNYL® ORANGE shaded solutions with improved electrical performance and processability. It has color retention capability beyond aging at 130°C for 1000h
  • TECHNYL®PURE, the range of electrical-friendly solutions ensuring safety-critical functionality by preventing corrosion

Another major focus for Chinaplas are polyamide solutions for the photovoltaic industry. For example, DOMO has introduced TECHNYL® PROTECT A 21T4 V25 BK to the China market. It is a red phosphorous-based HFFR product. This grade provides a balance between flame retardant, electrical and mechanical properties.

DSM’s Bio-based for PA Sustainable Furniture

DSM Engineering Materials in collaboration with consumer furniture brand noho produces stackable chairs.

This chair is manufactured from DSM’s EcoPaXX® bio-based PA. This polyamide is derived from the castor bean plant.
EcoPaXX® biobased polyamides have a wide range of uses across industries such as:

  • automotive
  • water management
  • consumer goods
  • electronics
  • food packaging

This PA from DSM combines superior functional performance, optimal durability, and excellent aesthetics. It has significantly reduced environmental impact.

CRP Technology PA-based High-performance Composite for Injection Molding

CRP Technology launched Windform® XT 2.0 IMG for industrial production and sustainability. It is 100% recycled from Windform® XT 2.0 industrial 3D printing material.

Windform® XT 2.0 IMG is a premium injection molding material. It is nylon PA12 based, and carbon fibers reinforced. It is the perfect choice for parts and components that must resist impact.

Ascend Launches Amorphous Nylon for Packaging Films

Ascend Performance Materials launched HiDura® LUX amorphous nylon for packaging films.

HiDura® LUX is used as a specialty modifier. It is blended with other polyamides to enhance key performance properties of packaging including:

  • Enhanced thermoforming
  • Improved orientation to optimize shrink performance.
  • Improved Optical properties, i.e. higher gloss and lower haze
  • Increased organoleptic performance and oxygen barrier

It is ideal for use in shrink films for protein packaging and thermoforming films. It can also be used in barrier layers for fiberboard packaging.

UBE’s FDA-approved Recyclable Copolyamide Grade

UBE introduced a new high performing copolyamide grade (CoPA 6/6.6), UBE NYLON 5036B. It has low crystallinity features and is approved for food contact by the US FDA.

With its low melting point of 179°C, UBE NYLON 5036B offers an additional improvement in recyclability.

This grade is ideal for high demanding food packaging application like thermoforming. It stands out for its excellent processability, puncture resistance. It also has superior mechanical, optical properties, and oxygen barrier.

Solvay’s New Family of Long Glass Fiber PPAs for Battery Applications

Solvay introduces Xencor™ XTreme, a new family of long glass fiber PPA solutions. It is ideal for battery applications requiring resistance to thermal runaway and propagation.

The are designed to withstand direct flame exposure at 1000℃ for over 10 minutes. This provides sufficient time for passengers to exit the vehicle in the event of a thermal runaway.

Key features of these grades are:

  • V-0 UL 94 flammability rating
  • high glass transition temperature (Tg)
  • high stiffness
  • impact resistance,
  • electrical insulation with a CTI of >600 volts, and
  • high dielectric strength

Arkema’s Bio-sourced PA for Fully Recyclable Shoe

Arkema collaborated with ON to produce high-performance running show, Cloudneo. Developed with Arkema's advanced bio-sourced polyamide resins, it is easily recyclable. ICIS recognized Arkema for this collaborative project.

Arkema’s bio-based materials have lower carbon footprint. These materials are derived from renewable castor beans.
