About Sabic Ultem Resin

ULTEM™ resin from SABIC is a high performance polyetherimide (PEI) thermoplastic material that offers outstanding elevated thermal resistance, strength and dimensional stability over a broad temperature range, inherent flame resistance and hydrolytic/chemical stability. Unique engineering properties of ULTEM resin enable performance comparable to many other high-performance semi-crystalline and amorphous polymers. As an alternative to sulfone polymer chemistries and with world-class manufacturing lead times, ULTEM™ engineering thermoplastic resin offers improved strength, modulus and UV resistance.

The ULTEM material portfolio uniquely balances both mechanical properties and processability, offering design engineers exceptional flexibility and freedom. ULTEM™ engineering thermoplastic resins are available in transparent and opaque custom colors to serve a broad range of aesthetic and optical needs.

An ISCC+ certified renewable bio-based ULTEM resin portfolio has recently been launched by SABIC Innovative Plastics business, offering sustainability benefits with interchangeable performance. These breakthrough polyetherimide engineering thermoplastic materials are the first certified renewable high temperature amorphous resins in the industry for potential use in challenging engineering thermoplastic applications in consumer electronics, aerospace, automotive and other industries.

In constant demand for thinner, lighter, more energy-efficient devices, manufacturers need to make thermoplastic products that are cost-effective to produce, comply with demanding regulatory requirements, and meet consumers' expectations for style, ease of use and sustainability. With a variety of different polyetherimide resins, the ULTEM™ plastic resin portfolio from SABIC has a fit in a multitude of industries.

WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS and
5G INFRASTRUCTURE

ULTEM™ resin's low and stable dielectric properties (dK/Df) and environmental stability can support communication devices with reduced signal interference and extended range.

And when it comes to fiber optic applications, ULTEM™ resin can be used in injection molded thermoplastic optical lenses and connectors to support consistent performance for repeated insertions, durability and precision coupling.

MOBILITY: AUTOMOTIVE & AEROSPACE

As a light-weighting strategy, ULTEM™ thermoplastic resin can be used as a metal replacement for die cast aluminum metal to provide design freedom for intricate injection molded parts and reduce the need for additional secondary operations.

As an alternative to sulfone thermoplastic chemistries for lighting applications, ULTEM™ resin can offer improved dimensional stability for better precision and improve haze resistance at high temperatures.

When specified versus bulk molding compounds (BMC), ULTEM™ resin can support the reduction of overall system costs by eliminating surface preparation and deflashing while supporting direct mold to metallization and recycling.

Sabic Ultem™ INDUSTRIAL

INDUSTRIAL

OEMs and designers choose ULTEM™ resin for its lower specific gravity and mechanical properties to create lighter, thinner, and stronger components versus PES, glass filled PPS and PPSU thermoplastics.

Compared to LCP thermoplastic, ULTEM™ resin offers improved strength for parts with complex geometries where weld lines and thin walls challenge mechanical performance. Strength is also a critical requirement for semiconductor test sockets and connectors that must endure harsh environments such as temperature fluctuation and chemical exposure.

ULTEM™ resin is used in 3D printing, specifically filament extrusion and large format additive manufacturing (LFAM), supporting the creation of thinner and stronger parts as well as autoclavable tooling.
