Advances in Action Sports Application Development Solutions

SpecialChem / Oct 4, 2010

Board makers recently showcased material option advances and niche-market products at this year's 'spring season' Action Sports Retailer Show in San Diego, California. The board manufacturing industry including surfboards, standup paddle, and body boards, forms a major segment of the active sports business. Originating in Polynesia around 400 A.D., surfing was first documented in Captain Cook's diaries when he visited Hawaii in 1777. The ancient Hawaiian surfboards were made of solid wood (from the Wili Wili, Ula, and Koa trees). The Catch Surfboard Company developed the technology exploring advanced shapes and materials to create the first ever high-performance soft surfboard. The boards are produced using a beaded polypropylene (BPP) foam core that provides stiffness, impact and water resistance unlike other soft surfboard core materials such as expanded polystyrene (EPS). Firewire Surfboards LLC recently introduced its RapidFire hybrid surfboard which optimizes surfboard flex by combining the carbon rod suspension of its DirectDrive surfboard with the 'Springer' technology based bamboo top deck skin of its Taj Pro model. High-end board manufacturer, Cobra International Co. Ltd. of Thailand collaborated with French technical textile specialist Porcher Industries to develop a new environmentally-friendly surfboard using Porcher's Greenlite high-performance renewable cellulose reinforcement as an alternative to standard glass fiber. Surf Grip serves as a performance-enhancing flotation device for bodysurfers. Developed by Sick Performance Concepts LLC of San Diego Surf Grip consists of a pair of foam paddles with handles that beach-goers can use while riding waves to increase buoyancy and extend their surf ride. Pardau LLC's land based 'Onda' board is cooler than a kick scooter, more convenient than a bicycle for short distances, and at less than nine pounds, can be conveniently taken anywhere and is easily carried into a room or onto a bus.
