PITTSBURGH -- Medical OEMs place stringent demands on the materials they use to meet the rigorous requirements of the medical device and health care markets. OEMs depend on polyurethane raw materials from Covestro LLC for medical applications ranging from advanced wound dressings and health care wearables to medical mattresses and prosthetic devices.

Right Dose for Health Care Applications

Covestro showcased its medical materials portfolio at one of the East Coast’s largest medical technology events – Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East, June 13-15, in New York City. Material solutions highlighted include thermoplastic polyurethane films (Dureflex® and Platilon® breathable films) and Baymedix® materials to create absorbent foams and skin contact adhesives.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Films

In addition to its Baymedix® raw materials, Covestro also highlighted its thermoplastic polyurethane films used by medical OEMs for health care applications.
  • Platilon® and Dureflex® films possess a desirable balance of durability, abrasion resistance and flexibility. Furthermore, OEMs can work with Covestro to customize the materials’ properties.
  • Platilon® and Dureflex® films can be used for medical wearables, such as patches used to house diagnostic-related devices, and wound dressings. Thanks to the materials’ high breathability, wound dressings can protect the wound while the breathability helps to advance the healing process and enhance patient comfort.

Baymedix® Materials

Covestro presented new and existing Baymedix® raw materials for sustainable, waterborne textile coatings that provide good haptics and enhanced stability to disinfectants.

Chris Koppenborg, head of medical, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties, Covestro AG, explained:
“Using a versatile yet sustainable coating technology has been a goal for the medical textiles market. Covestro is leading the way with its waterborne polyurethane dispersions to offer textiles customized properties.”

Visitors to the booth experienced first-hand Covestro’s versatile polyurethane materials that can be used for a variety of medical applications. Polyurethane materials can be used to create breathable low-trauma adhesives, highly absorbent foams and tailored films ideal for use in advanced wound care products where they support effective moisture management and help to improve patient comfort and healing.

Baymedix® raw materials from Covestro are an outstanding foundation for the creation of polyurethane foam, films and adhesives for medical applications. The customizable polyurethane products offer a robust property profile lending durability, flexibility and breathability to end-use applications.
