BANGKOK -- A sub-committee has been set up to screen financial subsidies and implements driving mechanisms in the bioplastic and biorefinery industry.

The Permanent Secretary for Industry Withoon Simachokdee has revealed that the ministry is working to attract investments in bioplastic resin plants as it is an upstream industry. The ministry is readying support for all aspects of the industry to create demand in the manufacturing chain.

Moreover, the Plastics Institute of Thailand has been assigned to compile information on bioplastics for potential investors, for example, the training required, research on molding techniques and production of bioplastic products.

The statistics however indicate that there are 3,800 operators connected to the plastics industry, while only 34 of them are involved in bioplastics. Since the bioplastic resins are imported, the manufacturing costs are high.
